This drawing is a preparatory study for Drift, a large-scale sculptural installation created during the planning phase for No Waste, an exhibition at Columbia College Chicago. Commissioned to activate the gallery’s expansive storefront window, the final installation evokes the form of a snowdrift or wave—constructed entirely from second-hand clothing.
The sculpture presents a dual visual experience: from within the gallery, a restrained, monochromatic surface in blue tones; from the street, a densely layered structure composed of garments rolled into compact whorls and arranged in chromatic strata. This interplay of interior and exterior surfaces highlights the tension between formal simplicity and material complexity. The work engages with the overwhelming scale of textile waste while reframing discarded garments as carriers of cultural and economic histories.
Approximate Size of the Finished Sculpture:
8.5′ x 17′ x 8.5′ (H x W x D)
Materials:
5,000 pounds of second-hand clothing, wood & hardware.
