Remembering how much fun it was to make a giant, i

Remembering how much fun it was to make a giant, inflatable, “lost mitten” for Hobart and William Smith Colleges back in 2015.

Going through some papers this morning, I came across the initial sketch, inspiration, and pattern making artifacts. Link in bio for a video of the resulting work.

It was lovely to work with Gabriella D’Angelo, Ted Aub and Alysia Kaplan to realize the project.

We were lucky to get a private tour of the architect Niemeyer’s private home, Casa das Canoas, Built in 1952 here in Rio. I especially loved the windows in the smaller rooms. They could have been large to show off the lush vegetation, but they were small and projected out into the garden. 🎂 Happy Birthday, William S. Burroughs! Back in 1987 I had a series of paranormal encounters, sparked by an unusual drawing experiment. I’d hold a pastel lightly over paper, relax my eyes, and let my hand move freely—almost like using an Ouija board. The results were promising, but soon I started feeling energy in my hands even after I was done drawing. It felt like something was guiding me—a tug here, a pull there. I began to wonder: Am I becoming possessed?

Having read many of Burrough’s books, I knew he believed in possession. So I wrote him a quick letter, describing my experiences and asking if he wanted to know more. I am not sure where I got his address, but I think one of my music friends in Philadelphia knew someone who shot guns with him in Lawrence. To my surprise, he replied!. It was a bit like getting a postcard from god. I dutifully wrote him a long letter back and that was that. Looking at the postcard now, I see he had actually included his phone number!! Should I have called him? Maybe I will now 👻
