This three-part sculpture is made from second-hand t-shirts. Each unit takes the form factor of one of New York’s iconic newspapers; The New York Times, The Village Voice, and The New York Sun. The “covers” are made from printed t-shirts, presumably produced by their respective publishers. The t-shirt “pages” have been folded in half and the entire “newspaper”, saddle-stitched together with wire.
As you page through the garments, they tell the story of the previous owner, their style, how they lived and how the clothing interacted with their body. Many of the garments are partially disintegrated, showing the passage of time, marked by the lives that were lived.
This sculpture was created in 2010 for a solo show at The University of Maryland.
These works can be displayed like you would a pile of newspapers, or arranged in jaunty piles to expose what lies within.
