Textile Art: Rapunzel

Rapunzel

This textile sculpture was created in collaboration with my longtime friend and mentor, Kelly Reemtsen. Kelly is best known for her bold paintings of women in vintage dresses wielding chainsaws, axes, and other powerful tools. Clothing plays a central role in both of our practices, so a collaboration felt inevitable.

Rapunzel (detail)

This piece was created on-site while Kelly and I were in Denmark for our collaborative show “Gathering Threads” at Gallerie Oxholm. We spent many afternoons combing through second-hand stores looking for party dresses, no longer wanted by the women of Copenhagen. Together we developed a new technique and designed this piece. It’s called Rapunzel to refer to ideas around female power, beauty and escape.
