🎂 Happy Birthday, William S. Burroughs! Back in 1987 I had a series of paranormal encounters, sparked by an unusual drawing experiment. I’d hold a pastel lightly over paper, relax my eyes, and let my hand move freely—almost like using an Ouija board. The results were promising, but soon I started feeling energy in my hands even after I was done drawing. It felt like something was guiding me—a tug here, a pull there. I began to wonder: Am I becoming possessed?

Having read many of Burrough’s books, I knew he believed in possession. So I wrote him a quick letter, describing my experiences and asking if he wanted to know more. I am not sure where I got his address, but I think one of my music friends in Philadelphia knew someone who shot guns with him in Lawrence. To my surprise, he replied!. It was a bit like getting a postcard from god. I dutifully wrote him a long letter back and that was that. Looking at the postcard now, I see he had actually included his phone number!! Should I have called him? Maybe I will now 👻

My art practice revolves around second-hand clothing, which serves as a lens for exploring personal history, identity and the body. I explore the complex intersection between global consumerism and the intimate relationship we have with what we wear.

This piece was created in multiple stages, beginning with rubbings of doll clothing and progressing through representations of babies, tweens, adolescents, and finally adults. Using wax crayon and acrylic on drafting film, it will be saddle-stitched onto museum board and set into a frame—a technique I developed specifically for this body of work.

I love to experiment! This one began with a ground

I love to experiment! This one began with a ground of blue and white paint. I then did a crayon rubbing of garment sleeves. Finally, I went in with the color of cement and filled the space between the sleeves. Like “pointing” a stone wall. I had plans to add another layer of color, but there’s something really satisfying about it the way it is now. We’ll see.
