To Draw Next, 2004

I made this sketch as a sort of to-do list. Many of these thumbnails become finished drawings.

Last week, when the washing machine repairman saw me wearing it, he pointed at the paint spatters and the frayed collar and said, “That’s no longer a sweatshirt, that’s a friend.”

Honestly, he got it.

One of the core ideas in my work is that clothing carries a trace of the person who wore it. We shape it, soften it, stretch it, repair it, live in it. In a sense, we animate it. Some people feel that deeply. Others wear something a handful of times and then toss it like an old rag.

My work reconnect us, even briefly, to the daily, often unconscious ritual of getting dressed.

Making progress on a commission made exclusively f Making progress on a commission made exclusively from denim.
Somehow a first for me, considering I’ve been working with second-hand clothing for over 20 years.
In this initial band, the denim transitions from white into off-white and pale blue. From there, it will move through every shade of indigo, with a few oddballs mixed in, before ending in black. Creating an even gradient has been challenging since I’m working only with the finished edges of garments. Fading, wear, and repairs introduce a lot of tonal variation.

I’m learning new things along the way. Denim is made by weaving indigo-dyed threads in one direction and undyed threads in the other. The indigo coats the surface of the yarn rather than fully penetrating it, which allows the fabric to fade over time. And while the terms are often used interchangeably, denim is the material, and jeans are the garments made from it. Which is why you can have a pair of corduroy jeans.
