In this drawing, I imagined a sculpture made from shirt sleeves—stitched into an irregular grid and wired to stand upright. It’s a kind of otherworldly, non-functional quilt.
Working with second-hand clothing, I’ve always been drawn to sleeves. I can’t help but think about the arms that once filled them, and the actions those arms carried out. While I stop short of anthropomorphizing, I feel compelled to isolate the sleeve—to examine its architecture, and its relationship to the body.
Years ago, I made several sculptures based on this idea, but in the end, I preferred the preparatory drawings. The sculptures are now lost, but the drawings remain.
