All in a days work. In the fall of 2023, with a small army of helpers, I covered the lawn in Travers Park, Queens, with second-hand clothing. I arranged the garments like a giant color wheel but with a dark center and a light outer edge. It ended up being over 100 feet wide, the largest clothing sculpture I have ever created. A one-day event, this project was an intervention as much as it was an installation. The clothing was simply placed on the lawn and at the end of the day, brought back to my studio. Most of the clothing was donated by @wearablecollections and the event was low carbon / low waste.

This is one of three sculptures I created this past winter. Together, they form the base of an enormous glass top table. It was such a sprint to finish them, we barely got to hang out. Guess I’ll have to visit them in LA, where the live at @circular.library

The color scheme was inspired by California’s legendary sunsets, but through the lens of memory, fantasy and photo manipulation.

It’s so nice to see this custom print installed in the office of the lovely aerospace engineer, Giorgia Lera. Here is what she had to say about the piece:

“I felt a sense of quiet joy when I first saw ’Night Sky’ in a magazine and I was really fascinated by how it was made. When we moved into our new engineering office, I immediately knew that I wanted a big “Night Sky” print behind my desk. Our company (@lafer_spa in Italy) makes machines that process fabrics, so Derick’s work made perfect sense in our environment.”
