From 2002-2007, I was in an arts collective called From 2002-2007, I was in an arts collective called Tag Projects. We built community, self-produced five exhibitions, sold work, and even got a rave review from Holland Cotter in The New York Times! These photos are from the last show we did called ”Alter & Circulate”. This was the concept:

Eight artists create eight collaborative works on paper over the course of one afternoon.  At the end of the day, they exhibit the work. At the end of the exhibit, they destroy the work. Artists spend the first hour setting up, chatting, and drinking coffee. They spend the next 4 hours working, rotating from one panel to the next, every 20 minutes. At the end of the day, they are back to the panel they started with and everyone has worked on each panel. Then they eat pizza and dance with you.

To my surprise, no one wanted to destroy the work and we ended up selling several of the pieces. They were full of good energy (and still wet). Thank you, Sacha Jones and DBA for hooking us up with the space!   Polaroids by Morgan-Owens, (Thanks Jessie!) with portraits of William (Patrick) Armstrong, Sara Julig, Tim Kent and a group shot also including the artists Charnan Lewis, Jessie Morgan-Owens, Magdalen Pierakos, Monika Zarenka and myself. An updated design for the proposed COVID-19 memori An updated design for the proposed COVID-19 memorial I am working on.

A year ago, on Friday, March 13th, my husband and I formed a COVID-19 pod with a handful of neighbors. In a year of social estrangement, political insanity, and a heart-wrenching death toll, It has been an incredible source of comfort and support. Sometime in April, my husband had a dream that I was making a sculpture out of clothing from COVID-19 victims. We puzzled at the thought, but within a few weeks, I started working on a design. In June, I launched covidnineteenmemorial.org. I don’t know of any precedents for a project quite like this. To make it happen will require sponsorship and the hearts and minds of a small army. It's been an uphill battle for sure, but I will keep trying. I had so much fun doing a pop-up studio for The Qu I had so much fun doing a pop-up studio for The Queens Council on The Arts in 2019. I rented a storefront in Jackson Heights and each morning, invited people in for a free cup of coffee. I created a new batch of rubbings on drafting film and as a by-product, this insane chair pile. It's not really "a piece", but I kinda love it. After a month the work was installed at Espresso 77, our beloved, artsy cafe.   @qnsarts @espresso77newyork @itsinqueens #jacksonheights #derickmelander #clothingart #secondhandclothing #sculpture #clothingsculpture #nysculpture #nycsculptor #sculptureart #abstractsculpture #usedclothing #clothingstacker #artistoninstagram #drawing #fineart #sustainablefashion #sustainability #zerowaste #fashionwaste #upcycle #installationart #textileart #textileartist #textilerecycling #artproduction #popupstudio #crayon #crayonrubbings

I have trouble in even accessing how carefree that day was. Thank you Swetta for hosting me and inspiring the fashion shoot. I’m wearing my own creation called “A Shirts” made by daisy-chaining 4 dress shirts together at the plackets. 2 fairies from @farmartscollective wandered in at the end. I hope you are all doing well, I look forward to seeing you on the other side of this. #fineart, #sustainablefashion, #sustainability, #zerowaste, #upcycle, #textileart, #sculptureart, #textileartist, #secondhandclothing, #abstractsculpture, #clothingart, #communityartproject, #wearableart, #textilerecycling, #clothingsculpture, #derickmelander, #fashionwaste, #contemporaryart, #textileart, #placket, #callicoon, #callicoonartwalk, #shirt,
